Read a story: Erube Lojasi

Imani and friends reading a bookHow far do you have to walk to get a glass of water? Imagine if you had to walk a mile every time you needed water for drinking or cooking! For many in Africa a walk of a mile or more is not unusual, and even then the water may not be safe to drink. But change is happening - by building wells that can make safe water easily available.

In Malawi 11-year-old Erube Lojasi (a-ROO-ba lo-HAH-see) lives in the village of Nsukawa. She's in the second grade. Erube has to fetch water for her family from the Mlunguzi river two or three times a day. It is almost 1 1/2 miles each way! She carries the water in a container on her head. Time spent getting water and other chores has slowed her progress in school. She's often very tired. Fortunately, she and her village will soon be benefiting from a new well provided by Church World Service that will make safe water easily available.

Can you imagine what a difference that well will make in her life? How do Erube's daily chores compare with your chores at home?

Give a gift of hope through Church World Service!
