Despite the many breakthroughs in medicine we hear about on the news, improving the health of people living in the developing world remains a challenge. In the year 2000 alone over 11 million children under age five died from preventable illnesses like diarrhea and acute respiratory infection. And one of the world's most urgent health issues - AIDS - continues to decimate families, communities, and entire nations, especially in Africa.

Seventy percent of all persons living with HIV and AIDS reside in sub-Saharan Africa. Almost 12 million African children have lost one or both parents to AIDS. In the face of this tragedy CWS supports the courageous struggle of families affected by AIDS to rebuild their lives through increasing their access to health care, nutrition education, and opportunities to earn an income.
